On the sand
Day 100 - Not planned, but 100 days in and i head to Fraser! The trip is a self-drive two night affair on the island (sand dune) so should be fun, camping out and have a couple of BBQ's over some cheap wine. I thought 30 beers was enough for the 2 days, especially as there was also a couple of gallons of wine (yes, gallons) bu there were 8 of us. The total number going was 17, but the group was split into an 8 and 9 - i think i got it lucky as the other group were younger, a bit dopey, and 7 were German! (i have no problem with Germans, but they do tend to stick together and converse in German most of the time)
Day got off to an interesting start. Not only was there torrential rain (100 ml overnight) but there were five 4WD's to take from hostel to camp a few miles away. After everyone got sorted, i was left in a group of four, none of who wanted to drive, so me, with no full license, and no experience of anything over 1.3lt, drove this monster on the road at 9am. It was busy, there were a couple of roundabouts, the thing had two gear sticks, other things i had no experience of, but i done well and we survived.
Got to the island and experienced the incredibly rough terrain before getting to the beach. One road we drove on for 30 minutes was blocked with fallen trees, we made a heroic, if somewhat lame attempt to move it before heading back. Was good craic, saw a few sights, set up camp, i made the BBQ (in torrential rain, again!) and had a night on the beer, well its not usual for me... We had got stuck a few times, but one of the other cars ended up with a broken axle and was essentially stuck for the day, until help arrived the next. There were loads of dingos around at night, but they are pretty harmless. That said, i don't think Chris would agree as one stole his backpack! Was pretty funny, but also incredible to see this fecker mosey on close to us, pickup a backpack and make off with it
Day 101 - Woke up a bit sore from camping, but feck it. Had another day driving around the east of the island seeing the sights, best of which were Indian head, champagne pools and the old shipwreck. I chose to cook again, this time a huge spag bol which went down very well (hopefully it won't come up as well!). Joined a big party that was going on close to us and got speaking to a couple of Scottish neds from Kirkintilloch, the type of folk that meeting makes me glad that i don't stay in Scotland anymore.` Not bad lads, just neds (oh, and Rangers fans to boot!).
Day 102 - A few of us woke up with hangovers, but we had to get over to Lake MacKenzie (which was a highlight) for a swim and chill out. Had the 4.30 ferry to get (last of the day) so we headed early and advised the other lads to do the same otherwise the $500 deposit could be forfeited (if ferry missed). We arrived in plenty of time, but 'Team Lame' failed to show up and as far as i know as still on the island. No one was that surprised. We got a bloke to take a team photo. You'll notice me as the shadowy figure lurking in the shadows on the right of the picture - i done my best to not appear at all, but that would just be unsociable!!. We got back to hostel for 6pm, i showered, changed, packed and got ready for another 13 hour bus trip up to Airlie beach.
