Day 79 - Caught a nice sunset and looked at glow worms last night, and this morning took a trip to a couple of museums / centres in Hokitika and wandered around the beach. The Kiwi museum was interesting (saw four kiwi's running around) as was the historical museum (though of course the film i wanted tio see was out of order!). Didn't have long to spend anyway as i had to get my arse to Franz Josef.

Took a local bus South past some stunning coastline / scenery, reaching Franz around 4pm. Booked into a dorm where a few Geordie's were staying, so had a bit of craic with them. Got myself booked onto an 8.15 full day glacier hike (the rest of the group are on the 9.15, but that was full when i arrived). Had a walk around 'town' and a couple of beers, but the place was fairly quiet.

Day 80 - Full day hike to the Franz Josef glacier. Met a Dub on the bus so had good company for the walk. Eleven of us went in the first (fastest) group up, onto, and across the glacier. Was an incredible experience, photos of which really don't do it justice. The glacier itself moves about 2 meters a year, is about 14km by 10km in length and is cold! We wandered through blue ice caves, tunnels, narrow 'alleyways' etc. One of the other guides had the misfortune of hitting his toe with an ice pick and had to be helicoptered out of the place. Had an absolute ball on the ice plains and didn't get back into town until around 5pm.  Went for a few drinks and bit of food with Ali before heading back to hostel around 11. Planned to head to where the Kiwi group was staying bus was too fecked.
