Where I stayed
We get up early again to get ready for another day of driving. We go to the kitchen to make marmite on toast, the standard breakfast for this trip, but the kitchen is well basic. All it has is an old gas cooker which Wellington, the gardener, has to hook up to a gas bottle. when he's done it the whole place stinks of gas so we figure we have to get out quick. We hurriedly make a marmite sandwich each and get out before the place blows.
We load the car and I go to check out only to find the want to charge me for the wine glass! I think this is a bit much, but it's only 15 Rand so I don't complain, too much.
We set off for Mossel Bay and have another excellent drive, more mountain roads and straight runs down to the coast. When we get there we find a restaurant called Delphino's. We order a light lunch of trammazini's, but when they arrive they are huge and come with chips.Mine has scrambled egg, bacon and mozzarella and Marianne's is chicken mayo, Eden has ham, cheese and tomato toasties, but that is too much for her also. After dinner we play on the beach for a bit. When we go back to the car some hobo is hanging around and asks me for money because he hasn't scratched the car. I tell him no, because that's what Louise from the wine tour told us to do, and he looks disappointed and walks away.
We drive a little way up the bay and stop at a beach the other side of the harbor for coffee. While we are there Marianne sees the hobo again and we think he will scratch the car, but he just walks on by.We finish our coffee's and then we head off for Oudtshoorn.
We drive along the coast for a little way, past nice apartments with a water park and a train yard with old steam engines, and then we turn left and drive up through the mountains. It's another fantastic drive with amazing scenery and I totally love it.
We arrive at Karoo Soul, Oudtshoorn and meet Ilze and she shows us our room. I can't believe how nice this place is, we have a “cottage”which is like a studio apartment with lounge, bedroom and kitchenette all in one. It's so nice I have to go and check that I have the price right, but Ilze says it's R350 a night, which is cheaper than Saltycrax and Swellendam Backpackers, but so much nicer.
Because we have our own kitchen we decide to go to Checkers, the local supermarket, to buy some food and save money on restaurants. We buy a bunch of food and the walk home is difficult and a bit scary, because we are in an unfamiliar town, and we wished we had driven.
We cook onion soup for tea and I open a bottle of oddbins mystery wine that I bought in Checkers. The wine is excellent and we have dinner al fresco, and relax under the stars.
