I'm a couple of days behind in posting – busy times here in the Caribbean islands of the British Virgin Isles. Today’s post shares photos from our trip from Tortola across by ferry to Virgin Gorda a couple days ago. We were in search of walk routes that we could link to a few famous beaches on the southern tip of Virgin Gorda. Alas, all we found were a few trails down to the beaches themselves that amounted to about a mile or so. Though we were fascinated by the beaches, and the granite labyrinth that connected them, Virgin Gorda is probably not going to be on the final program.
We are coming to some resolution about this Adventure however. This is becoming a walking adventure in which walking is not a primary theme. We’re finding some interesting walking, but to say that walking is the core activity of this trip stretches the reality that these islands have a different character on which to focus.
Our Caribbean Island Getaway is becoming just that – a getaway experience that focuses on the incomparable charm of these islands – the seemingly endless perfect beaches, the delightful shades of blue and green of the water, temperatures that never drop below 70 degrees, and the laid back pace of life in the West Indies.
Yes, we have interesting walks laid out, with the promise of more to come. Our focus, however, is shifting to a connection with the spirit of the Caribbean. I’m not talking about the spirit of the Caribbean the way the cruise ship companies see it. Casinos and booze cruises and the quest to remove tan lines are still far outside the scope of this Adventure. The spirit I’m talking about is one of relaxation: of listening to a gentle surf lapping upon a perfect beach; of taking time to watch an entire sunset, mesmerized by the colors, and the acrobatics of pelicans diving for their evening fare; of sitting on the front of a catamaran as it cuts through gentle northern swells to the next snorkeling stop.
This is becoming a very different kind of Adventure, and we’re enjoying the privilege of witnessing the transformation! If you want to experience the Caribbean in a hurry, this may not be the Adventure for you!

I am glad you let the Islands tell you how they wish to be seen. I am looking forward to this trip.
I like the sound of a laid back island vacation especially with beach time.Is St. John on the list.? Last time we were there at the camp ground there were trails that we walked.
Hi Myrtle, Yes, St John is in the program. We just spend several hours there today reviewing several trails. Looks like a fun day that we'll spend there en route from Tortola to St Thomas.
