I've visited Bryce Canyon 3 or 4 times in the distant past. Never, however, have I spent much time below the rim. Walks we’ve planned in the past have taken advantage of extensive walking along the rim that has the dual benefit of unparalleled panoramas and relatively easy walking.

On this visit, however, we were looking for a "challenge" option to offer those with a yen to get up close and personal with these amazing sandstone formations. What follows in these photos is a record of our journey “below the rim”. The trail we selected is about 3 miles long and provides a balance with the incredible rim views from up top.

At 8000 feet above sea level, it felt, at times, as though we were walking uphill both directions. All told, however, the thrill of the trail was well worth a bit of huffing and puffing. Tomorrow, we’ll review other parts of the rim trail before moving on to our last stop – Zion National Park.
