Melbourne was good to us yesterday! It was a Sunday morning and the street through the oldest Chinatown in Australia, the first section of our walk, was like a ghost town. The next section took us through the Parliament district and into Fitzroy Gardens and the Treasury Gardens, green oases in this 2nd largest city of Australia.
By the time we wrapped back into the “CBD” – the Central Business District – at 10 am, things were starting to pop. Local walk, Lia, told us that Sunday has become a day to come into the city. The “in” thing to do is to spend the day in Melbourne and things were happening everywhere we looked.
There was an Amazing Race-type charity game going on all over the city, teams dressed in different garb and costumes running all over the city after clues and signing in a checkpoints. The ANZAC memorial was buzzing with activity as the Greek contingent from the city, the largest immigrant population in Melbourne, arrived en masse to celebrate their national day at this impressive memorial to the Australia New Zealand Army Corp.
Members of the group peeled off at various points during the walk to enjoy the many offerings of Melbourne in terms of museums, a free tram ride tour, the Queen Victoria Market, the Old Melbourne Gaol (jail), and more. We rendezvoused last night for a delightful and delicious dinner, possibly the best food of the trip yet, aboard the Colonial Tram, a restored Victorian-era tram, that gently rolled through the city while we dined in style. It was a monstrous hit with the group and, with the unlimited and free flow of wine available, I believe they all slept well last night!
