Where I stayed
The Plan: set out early from Florence and head to the beach...or otherwise known as Nice on the French Riviera.
The Reality: an Italian train strike. Hours of waiting. Frustration. Anger. Desperation. Resignation. And finally...Milano.
Thank God for the time share! Literally, after the stress of the day, we walked out of the Termini and stumbled on Le Meridien. Luxury! An internet cafe and a phone call later...and thank you very much a 5 star hotel awaits, even "for free" (or at least 10,000 points).
We caught our breath...I'll admit. But then wander lust (and an unplanned city) got the better of us and it was out the door, to the train station, and to the Duomo (3rd largest Christian Church) and Galleria. Great heights and views. Awesome end to a strange day. And then...we needed a beer and had a great talk with a couple from Istanbul. These encounters - over beer, especially - make traveling worthwhile.
A relaxing end to a long day.
