After 7 weeks of being here, and speaking to others who have regretted not writing a diary or blog, i have decided to do one myself to record everything. so here is the beggining 7 weeks in short!
I arrived in Sydney expecting to get off the plane and for it to be sunny and hot. this was not how it was at all, it was as cold as england and wet. not what you picture at all!! i wanted to be in my uggs and trackies, not flipflops and and shorts!! and thats how it was for the first week or so.
Staying with friends was a nice way to settle in, get over the jet lag and getting to know the area i am living in for the next 10 months. I went to china town and had my first experience of Yum Cha, saw the bridge and the opera house, and attempted eating with chop sticks at a local japanese but failed. oh and ofcourse meeting friends in sydneys kings cross.
loving the cheapness compared to the pound, i bought a few new items, after all, coming out with 17kg for 10 months, i realised i was a bit limited!!
Then i moved into my flat at the school. i was so shocked i was getting my own flat, i have a big room, a shower room, dressing area and a lounge area. very lucky! i met all the boarders and got started to get used to working at a school not being a student.
I knew that going on a gap year you experience new things but some of the things i experienced in the first two weeks i did not expect! I broke up and bitch fight and i helped a girl who was going into anafalatic shock...quite an eye opener.
Knowing people out here was a really nice part of travelling alone. they made me very welcome and introduced me to friends of theirs which was really nice. i have many families away from home now, so i know i will have somewhere to go if i need it!
i have found that living on my own i am spending to much time online in the mornings and evenings. saying "night night, have a good day" a new sentence now commonly used within my vocab made it feel more real about being away, and being sick when your mum is not around is one horrible part of being a 23 hour flight away with an 11 hour time difference! but all in all you cannot stop loving the lifestyle compared to the UK
I have experienced the colder sydney, the wet sydney and the 40 degree heat sydney. wow its hot! being an english girl knowing it was going to be hot but not knowing how hot 40 degrees was, was a bit of a shock, and there is more to come! in sydney though the weather changes, one day hot, the next day colder....well thats what it is for now anyway!
I saw my first kangaroo the other day when i was in the hunter valley. i was unwell and had been given orders by the Dr to take the rest of the week off, so i did and went to a friends farm. i was very excited to see a kangaroo, and tried to take a picture, although they run away quite fast. I also experienced the extreme mosquito biting that happens, and will definatley be purchasing some anti mossie spray.
i have killed two huntsman spiders that have ventured into my room. i know some people think it is cruel, but when you see the size of them and the little fangs they have, they are not something you want to catch in a cup and throw outside. at all.
possums are not the cute little things everyone thinks they are. they are quite scary especially when the stare at you with there red eyes from a tree. i was sure i was going to get attacked by one the other day after getting out of a friends car!
now we are coming into summer, seeing xmas decs around the place is very odd, as it does not feel christmassy at all with it being so hot. i have written the cards and sent some home, and next week i have the last week of the year at school so there will be speech days and carol services and christmas meals....i wonder if there is much of a difference...i will let you know.
i visted the aquarium and saw some sharks and nemo. and many other fish obviously. i am looking forward to having time off where i can go into the city and walk around seeing different sites, and going to the zoo! and maybe do a skydive over the sydney beaches!
sorry this post has been so messy, but that is a bit of news about what i have been up to so far. i wil try and update as often as i can with more news of what i have been doing!
