The city of Minneapolis turned out to be a lovely trip. It's a jewel of a city with clean streets and a busy park system. I could not get over how many people were out using the surrounding lakes and bike paths! It was actually crowded with humanity. The old homes that surround the south side of the city are both unique and beautiful. Between all this beauty rest a large park that is worthy of any city anywhere! It is called Minnehaha Park. The Minnehaha creek runs through it forming a gorgeous falls that runs directly into the Mississippi River less than one mile below. We hiked to the outlet. The trip was easy and picturesque.
We then found a Mississippi lock because I had never seen a boat taken up by that type of system.
The lock we found raises or lowers a boat some 38 feet to the new river level. Turns out that the control room was open only one day a year and we happened to be there that day! Cool. :-)
After the lock experience, we checked out some of the local lakes where hundreds of people were running, swimming, and biking. It's a physically very active city!
We then took a quick trip to the worlds first indoor mall called Southdale Mall. No one knew how it would go over. Many believed it would be a total flop. BUT!!! The proof is in the pooding. :-) Southdale was the beginning of something big! In fact, the biggest mall in the country is also in Minnapolis. We're going there tomorrow! It's called The Mall Of America.
Have fun,
Fred
