What a day folks!  Kimmy, her Mom Sandy, and I made it to Cape Canaveral at about 1:30PM.  Unfortunately, Mark had to work.  We found a nice Cafe right on the water.  Kimmy and Sandy found out that there was a large fishing boat (probably about 70 feet) that was selling tickets to go out into open water for a perfect view from the launch pad.  We ran toward the boat as they were preparing to leave and hopped on! It took about 30 minutes to get out of the harbor and into open sea.  I just happened to have the perfect spot on the boat.  The launch was right on time at 2:20PM.

I have been blessed with many wonderful experiences in this life.  I've soared the Flagstaff mountains with hang gliders,  I've dove the Mediterranean Sea for treasures, and hiked some of God's most beautiful trails.  But today gave me a thrill that I have never, ever experienced.  As the Shuttle fired its angry breath and arched over my head a tear found it way across my eyes.  I swelled with something akin to a mixture of pride, awe, and humility.  The shuttle has been a symbol of American ingenuity.  We began this impossible dream in the late sixties by creating the most powerful rocket in the history of man.  We did the impossible with the Saturn Five Rocket ship.  Some laughed and scorned just as they did at Oliver and Wilbur at Kitty Hawk. But perseverance persisted.  We held the idea of landing on the moon with a death grip and saw it through.  Today, I saw the results of many years of research, disappointing experiments and successful endeavors.  Today, we witness another success.  It will become the threshold of landing upon Mars.  It is my hope to live long enough to witness this miracle too!

We continue to look outward.  At times, I think the challenge to look inward is as great as an astronauts trip outward.  They are both adventures that will bring miracles to this world.  I can say that my own journey has delivered a selfish, self serving man to someone wishing to bring kindness to the world.  My journey inward will carry me to new heights also!  Today, both journeys combined to give thanks for both experiences!

Bless all my friends and family,
Fred

Thanks for sharing your experience as you always so eloquently do. What a joyous gift you received to have been able to see the one thing you hoped for so close. C'etan, the Hawk, truly flew with you that day. So happy I got to share a moment of it over the phone.
