Gondar was probably my favorite city in Ethiopia thus far. It is famous for the royal castle enclosure.  This complex consisted of six old castles from the 17th century and our hotel was directly across from this complex.   Each castle once belonged to one of the former King's of Ethiopia.  There was also many other interesting parts to the complex including a church, lion cages, horse stables, banquet halls, concert halls, sauna and baths.  These castles are still quite old and missing a lot of the original ceilings and walls.  Some of them were partially destroyed in World War 2 because Italy occupied Ethiopia as a headquarters and England bombed this area, but this did save Ethiopia.  This complex is a UNESCO world heritage site and thus was restored by UNESCO in 1999.  I really enjoyed these castles.  There really isn’t much else to do in the city of Gondar.  It is a typical old city with dirt roads.  Gondar still has all the beggers that Ethiopia has.  There is a system here that allows tourists to buy bread vouchers.  It is nearly $1 for 20 vouchers and we decided to give them out to locals.  This is a much better system than giving them money.
