On my third day in Dominican Republic, I woke up hoping to go to Haiti to visit my dad's cousin named Paul.  The bus was canceled and I made a last minute decision to go to Puerto Plata. The man the previous day told me there was nice beaches here and I also looked online on hostels.com and one of the hostels said walking distance from the beach. This was not true. I
walked for an hour looking for the beach and got nothing. Finally I had to jump in a bus and go another 20 KM before I got to the beach.  The man in the bus asked for 100 pesos, but the other people on the bus paid 50 pesos. I found a hotel about 3 minutes walk from the beach for about $25. I walked to the city center to get some food.  The city city is only about 3 blocks, but has a good area. The beach is only about 100 M down a hill from the city center. After eating, I walked to the beach. There are a lot of very run down bars and shops here. Each bar has about 2 or 3 good looking girls sitting outside and they try to lure you in and sometimes want you to pay for sex. I talked to a local and he said every girl in the bar is a prostitute. The bars are literally made out of whatever scraps you can find, but there are a lot of ex patriots here. Some are retired and found a little lady and some started up their own business here.
The beach was OK at best and the water was better than most places.  At night, I:went to dinner. I needed to find a postcard to mail and a girl came up to me and I asked her where the post office was. She was a short, ugly girl with skanky clothes on. She pointed and we
went up the hill. They said the post office was closed and I tried to ditch her several times. I ended up finding a tourist souvenir shop and asked them where the mail box was and they had one in the office, so I mailed it. I went out to dinner and had some great spaghetti bolognese with chili peppers and the girl still followed me. I told her in broken Spanish “Yo voy en me hotel solo, no sex.” She kept following and I made it to my hotel and went to reception. I told the receptionist to ask the girl to leave. She started crying saying she helped me find all this stuff. She needed money for food, taxi and a bus and wanted me to pay for all this. I
said no. I explained I found all this myself and she just cried and cried and I was just so confused at why a girl thought I would have to pay her when I did everything myself and we didn't do anything sexual for me to pay her for. I'm proud to say I still have never had sex with a prostitute.
