I woke up early again and were off to the next destination. It took me 1 hour to get to the port on Camiguin called Benoni. Then another 1:20 to get to the mainland port of Balingoan. From there another 2:30 to Cagayan de Oro. I decided to stay here for a night despite there not being much here. I was lucky enough to be able to get a trip for the following day for a white water rafting trip. This area of the country has the most famous white water rafting trips in the country and have got very good reviews
. We were off to the SM Mall first to get some good food and window shopping, then off to the hotel to rest and grabbed some dinner at a restaurant called MexItalian. It was pretty good. I walked around a bit after dinner. I had been in the situation before in a few other cities in Philippines and I really do not feel comfortable going out in this country at night. There are worse places to be than Cagayan, but in general, I would not recommend for people to go out at night unattended in this country. I got back to the room and for the first time in my life, I got to see someone eat balut. I was quite grossed out. These eggs basically have chicken flesh in them. She took the shell off and broke it down and showed me the intestines and all the other good parts to eat. It's like a desert here. It was quite disgusting. I understand she likes it. That's her thing, but I sure won't be eating anything like that.
I got up early and my rafting trip was canceled
. They put me on another trip at 9 AM instead of 7 AM. We drove one hour out of the city and hopped in the river. The rapids were class 3. It was a great time. I had a lot of fun. I did a rafting class in college and I knew a lot of the things about the river already. There were 6 people in my boat. I was in it. Two guides and 3 local girls. The girls started out by saying “Hi, my name is.... and I'm single.” At the end of it, they asked if I was single. The water started out being cold, but warmed up a bit. It took about 2 hours to take the short course down the river. He long course is six hours. Cagayan de Oro is supposed to have the best river rafting in Philippines and it was pretty good. Upon returning, we went to the bus station and took the bus to Davao. The Lonely Planet was said it was a six hour trip. The bus driver said it was seven hours, but after 7 hours, we had only reached the half way point. It was so bad and the only thing that kept me happy was that this is my last long bus ride in Philippines this trip. I have an hour bus ride coming up in a few days, but that's not so bad. The scenery on this bus ride from Cagayan to Davao started out being pretty nice in the mountains, but got dark after 3 hours of the ride and it was pretty boring from there. It was in the mountains and a good change from the previous trips. I feel like I got to see all of the different sceneries that the country can offer including tropics, volcanoes, islands, mountains, hills and the cities. Upon finally arriving in Davao, I got the cheapest room we could and went to bed.
