Pau to Port Leucate shouldn't take more than a couple of hours, but the way we went took all day! Given my love for castles, and the fact that the road between Pau and Port Leucate is scattered with old castle ruins (and is the old country of the Cathars), how could we miss the opportunity to take in the scenery.

We exited the motorway at Saint-Gaudens and headed to Foix along a windy and scenic road. There were a few sights along the way, but given the distance we decided to stop at only a few special places...

Once we got to Foix, the first thing you see is the Castle on top of the hill. We attempted to stop for a visit, but there was a market on in the centre of the town and there was nowhere to park. After navigating our way out of town (after a couple of near misses!), I picked a couple of placed I really wanted to see.

Chateau de Foix

Chateau de Foix

Our first stop, was an 11th Century ruin that I spotted on the map. Unfortunately it wasn't well sign posted, and we ended up doing quite a few more kms that we needed to, to get there...

Once we found right road, it was a 10 min walk up a steep hill to get to the site. Once there, it looked like somebody was living there and we were invading there property. But upon further investigation, we worked out that someone was living there and they were working on restoring the ruin to a state so that people could camp at the bottom and visit the castle.

Once I got to the top and went inside, we were confronted by a large herd of goats that looked hungry and very menacing... We quickly turned around and headed back down the mountain...

Castle number 1, done.
