To reach this place, as very often in Crete, you have to deserve it and proove your motivation with a 30-45 minutes walk. Ok, generally, it goes down to get to the beach (huuuu) but think you'll need to climb up to get back to your car later...
The way down is delightful for the eyes, the way is made of steps, no worry about that, it is safe. The overview of the beach, with all these palm trees and this river arm reaching the sea, is simply fabulous. Well at this period of the year, the beach is almost empty, but the locals will tell you to avoid the place in summer: the beach is not very large and long, the shadows of the trees are scaled and the peaceful charm of the oasis is lost.
Anyway, april-may is fine, the temperature is ok (25-27°C) and the oasis (yes, I call it an Oasis, compared to the nakedness of the mountain hill surrounding the gorges, see the pictures) is empty and quite, at thye exception of some residual tents or camps: some hippies live there all year long, as quite often on remoted beaches in Crete.
A walk along the river, which sometimes is assimilated as a lake (in the back, were the gorges become narrower), is a nice trip to do, among the palm trees, and suddenly one is not anymore in Crete but in Tunisia or any other Maghreb country (which are not that far actually...).
