I arrived in Heraklion after at damned long stop in Athens (5 hours stop before catching the connecting flight to Heraklion, which lasts only 45 minutes!), at night, and was welcome buy my girlfriend, who lives there a the moment. We took a cab to the centre of the city, inside gigantic venitian walls. Here the traffic jam seems to be permanent, and it takes quite a long time to drive the 8 km from the airport. Anyway, we arrived, left my bags at home (a nice 2 rooms flat right in the centre) and went for a taverna (intermediate between café and restaurant, generally cheaper and providing local food).
What's good here is that the have dinner very late (around 10.30 - 11 pm) so entering a taverna around 11 doesn't shock anyone! Our only problem that night was that we arrived around 12.30 (am then), and everything was closing down (or they did not want to serve us). Back to the flat at around 1 am, after having walked around the centre in vain...
The next morning, we planned to go to Rethymnon, west, by car, so to wake up very early to get the car at the rental house...
