Yesterday me and Anita took Stephan to the hospital in Mbingo as he had taken a turn for thr worst. We were seen fairly quickly, probably because we are white and were told Stephan needed to be admitted. I paid the 30,000 CFA in advance to admit him and i headed back to Belo to inform John Paul, one of the field workers, of what was going on.
It was upsetting enough seeing Stephan try to run away and cry because he was frightened of the hospital, we had to grab him and physically put him back in the ward.
However, when I came back me and Anita had to wait for a few hours before John Paul brought Stephan's grandmother to stay with him for the night. What I saw then will never ever ever be erased from my memory no matter how hard I try, no matter how much I try to block it out I can still see the images.
Doctors suddenly rushed in, carrying a limp and lifeless boy, and rushed in machines for oxygen and a machine to drain the blood away. They tried to resucitate him but he died.. Right there on the children's ward and right in front of us.
I will never get the image of his body, the body being wrapped up in blankets, the father crying or the mahine filled with blood out of my head.
They just left the machine there, long after the body was gone and it was still there when we left in the evening.
We don't know how fucking lucky we have it.
