From Todos Santos, Baja

Back in La Paz, Saturday morning we made our way out to the ferry terminal at Pichilingue to get our vehicle temporary importation papers and tickets on the ferry to the mainland. After looking over all our options we decided on the short ferry ride on the newer boat to Topolobampo. Six hour ferry ride booked for the 14th of February, our Valentine's gift ! So after much fooling around with all the Mexican officials and ferry operators we headed around noon to explore the lower tip of Baja until scheduled trip over to the mainland.
From La Paz we made our way toward Todos Santos some 50 km down the road on the Pacific Ocean side. On the outskirts of La Paz we stop at a huge fairly new shopping mall for sun glasses for Rita and a few groceries and shopping exploration. We see that it looks much like any major shopping mall we've visited anywhere in the US or Canada, prices are about the same too, surprise - surprise !
A few hours later we eventually arrive in Todos Santos, a small, population 4000, of mostly displaced artists from everywhere imaginable. Quite the contradiction to the rest of Baja places we've visited so far. Down the main street we find numerous boutiques with jewellery and gadgets the likes of we're never seen. The afternoon is spent perusing the wares and yes we made more purchases to help out the local economy and tax the springs of the Westy. We visit briefly the Hotel California made popular by the Eagles. We will go back before heading off to Cabos.
After shopping out we have some burritos and beer and head off in search of a campsite for the night. Four miles south we find San Pedriito RV Park and mostly gorgeous beach we've come across so far. A long wide curved bay light brown sand beach covered with small RV's and tenters. Mostly surfers as the waves here are supposedly the best around. For a mere $8 we have a spot right on the sandy beach and watch the best sunset ever. Off to diner at the restaurant we meet to couples in travel trailers from BC. Diner with them and chatting about the state of Canada vs life in Baja is good !
Sunday morning we decide to stay instead or returning to Todos Santos for more shopping. Between the surfers, hundreds of whales breeching off shore and great neighbours why would we want to leave ? We spend the day meeting people, getting sunburned for the first time and drinking up what beer we have left on board. There is a restaurant bar here so no need to worry ! Another brown Westy is spotted with a huge solar panel on the roof. Ben and Bev are full timers, van plated out of Montana, on their way to Belieze. They are professional photographers sending in shots for travel and lifestyle magazines. Life is tough for them ! We walk the beach in both directions from our almost central location and I eventually take the plunge into the surf. The waves are huge and I promptly get knocked off my feet. Out and hand over my glasses and straw hat to Rita and back I go for a real go at the waves. Invigorating that first early morning swim in the Pacific Ocean !
So now it's late and believe it or not there is a WiFi connection from our van that I will use momentary to post this message. Paradise -- this is Paradise !
Tomorrow more exploration and eventually off to Los Cabos and The Big City !

Ahhh the life!
We are enjoying all the reports of your adventures and are keeping the details of your travel times and the campgrounds for our planning purposes. Love to see the pictures of the westy on the beach, that is what we have envisioned for our Baja trip. We are keen to hear about the ferry crossing. We are uncertain if we will do that as we have two dogs and were concerned that they must be left for a long time. But we see that you have a dog too, so any feedback on ferries and dogs will be appreciated.
