Where I stayed
Day 1 of our New York experience and we took ourselves down the street to the ups store, its a little less menacing by day as usual!! Still uncomfortable, but we can deal with that! Got ourselves a metro card each which gives us unlimited use of the Mta and jumped onto a bus which took us to Jamaica central, twenty minute ride and there we go underground! and onto the subway, we take the E line, "world trade centre bound local train" as opposed to express, and have our very first NY subway ride!!! About forty minutes and we're in Manhattan downtown!!!
We walk out of the subway and up onto the street and wow!! Again, another thing we've been waiting for, we wandered around for a while, a little bit headless, grabbed some food, before we got ourselves sorted and really hit the shops!!! What better way to start in New York!!
We pretty much had our hands full with the shopping on 34th street but throughout the day we walked pretty much all of 34th - 50th street, and just kept walking around, going Ooo look at that, cool look at that,
We saw Times Square, The Rockefella Centre, Madison Square Garden, The NY Times building, HBO building, we went in Macy's, we saw the theatre district/Broadway, we saw the empire state building and of course lots of shopping!! [Too many shops to list and our aching legs are proof!!]
It's everything you picture and imagine, the taxis, the street food vendors and newsagent stalls, the street stalls, the crowds - though early morning wasn't so bad, after lunch it was nuts! ! The Christmas decorations in the store fronts, particularly Macy's, the steam coming manhole covers, the heat from the big vents in the sidewalk, the huge buildings and everything else...
That particular Saturday we had a bit of a treat as well, the Santa convention was on, so there was just huge groups of Santa's running round New York, bar hopping so that was good fun to see, bit of the Christmas atmosphere going on!!
The first half of the day we spent walking around 34th street and up and down 7th, 6th and 5th, later on we spent walking around the theatre district and around the Rockefella Centre and your just overwhelmed by it all really, around times square and the Rockefella and the surrounding streets, looks like the ultra modern picture you have in your head - the shiny skycrapers, everything is just so huge and shiny!!
Midtown around Broadway is all spangly and glitzy with the neon lights everywhere and further downtown around 34th the buildings all look, don't know if they are, but they look all old style. We love the buildings!! We're sad aren't we!! They even have all the fire escape ladders down the sides!!!
No, we had a massive day, saw more than we can remember, made our way back got some Chinese and that was that!!!
Oh yeah forgot to say.... Soooo cold!!! Had to buy gloves. So cold. Plus you never even see the sun, its out, but you don't see it, your caged in by all these buildings looming way overhead, you don't even see the sky hardly!!!
Today we ticked off most of the western part of Downtown and Midtown and Midtown West, tomorrow we move on!!!
