Arrived in Athens a little washed out after 18 hours on a ferry from Bari to Patras. Boarded a lovely old rickety train in Patras for a picturesque 3 hour trip into Athens, where, finding our hotel proved to be quite an adventure.
Loved this ancient city with its mixture of rich history and its equally fast and modern lifestyle.
Language is proving to be more and more of a problem, but the sign language has moved to a whole new level!
Devoted one whole day to cramming in as much history as we could and no more - (deal made with the kids!) Went up Lycabettus Hill for an amazing view of Athens - huge sprawling city below, that seems to go on forever. Then went to the Acropolis (Holy rock of Athens), marvelling at the Parthenon and other ancient Greek temples. Kept up the pace and visited the Panathinaikon Stadium (Olympic Games), the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Hadrian's Arch and Ancient Agora, after which we flopped back to our hotel to unwind and try to digest it all!
Spent the rest of our time in Athens, enjoying the local cuisine, exploring the Plaka (old Athens) full of interesting little shops and arcades, tavernas and markets - quite bustling, but very picturesque. Took a train trip to the coast and visited the port of Piraeus. Really enjoyed these few days of relaxing and absorbing as much of the culture as we could. Had some wonderful traditional Greek meals and were ready to move on to the more rural life on Rhodes Island after 4 days.
