EGYPT 4: RED SEA (Hurghada, Sharm el Sheik and Dahab)
Drove through the desert in a police convoy to eventually reach Hurghada in the East on the Red Sea. Hotels are slowly getting better and it was great to be near the sea again. Bought snorkelling equipment and were amazed at how much sea life there was so close to shore. Stranded here for an extra day as the sea was too rough for the hydrofoil to make the crossing over the Sharm el Sheik.
When we did make the crossing it wasn't pleasant - people vomiting all over the show as the sea appeared and disappeared up against the windows. Greg and Rob took medication fortunately and slept most of the way.
Dahab was the highlight of the Red Sea area. Stayed at a lovely seaside resort where the snorkelling off the shore was amazing. Tom took some great underwater shots. Travelled by jeep one day to the Blue Hole where we all snorkelled and enjoyed the sensible beach houses/shacks where one could get out of the sun and be pampered with Egyptian crepes and coffees and lounge around on the tapestry beds soaking up the great view of the barren desert behind us and the turquoise water in front with a steady stream of tourists on camels up and down the beach.
Enjoyed some great entertainment at the resort and had a very flash seafood dinner on the water's edge in Dahab on our last night - won't mention the price!
Headed off on the long drive back to Cairo the next day, via the Sinai Peninsula (Saudi Arabia just over the water!) and then across the Sinai Desert to the Suez Canal where we travelled via the underground tunnel back to mainland Egypt and Cairo.
All caught midnight flights out of Egypt that night - Petrina back to S.A. and we headed back to Germany. Sad to say farewell to a good buddy! Thanks so much for joining us Petrina - some good laughs and special memories that we'll always share and treasure!
