So now, a little history! :)
We detoured a mile off I-70 to the little town of Victoria, settled by English "gentlemen farmers" in 1873. A group of poor immigrants from southern Russia (Volga-Germans) joined them in 1875. They built a village of sod huts next to Victoria and proceeded to make a living off of the land whereas the British found pioneer life too extreme and returned home to England.
Hounoring their Catholic faith, the Germans erected a tall wooden cross in the village, followed by a small church in1876. Three churchs were built over the years until today there stands the structure know as "the Cathedral of the Plains"
The church grave yard was quite a contrast of old and new.
We watched the news tonight and were devastated by the damage in OK done by the tornadoes. It appears that storm front is continuing in up to Kansas City and could cause problems in the surrounding areas tomorrow. We could be right in the middle of it. Darn.
