Where I stayed
After an early morning departure and a transfer in Dallas, we arrived in New Orleans in mid-afternoon. The humidity was immediately obvious as we waited in line for a taxi. We checked into our hotel, The Pere Marquette Renaissance, on the edge of the French Quarter and took a short rest to recover from the travel. We ventured forth down Bourbon Street and were bombarded by all its brash exuberance. Every type of pleasure and vice was on display for the world to see, replete with neon lights, loud music, strip clubs, mediocre food and the odd drag-queen. We enjoyed our first busker show which featured a young man drumming on overturned pails while his partner enthusiastically danced eventually sliding across the platform on his head.
On the corner of Jackson Square we found Muriel’s restaurant and were fortunate to get in without a reservation. The decor was appealing with one wall completely covered with clocks. The three course meal was delicious and filling; garlic soup, grilled chicken, rich chocolate mousse that was even too much for us to finish. This was our first clue that portion-size has a whole new meaning in the deep south!
