Hazy and 31C

Today was a day of leisure! It started with a gentle wake-up call from the birds outside our open window. After a quick shower, we enjoyed another outstanding breakfast to start off a perfect morning. We then took stock of our various purchases of souvenirs and gifts, not wanting to leave out any of our friends or family. Another trip to the grocery store, an unsuccessful trip to the Terentola market just up the road (it was closing as we got there) and we were ready to begin the arduous task of packing. While Celine created an inventory, I wrapped all the delicate items and strategically packed them to survive the airport baggage handlers ministrations.

Additional admin work ensued as we summarized our expenses and reviewed the budget. It looks like we are exactly where we expected to be. The total cost of the trip, including pre-trip purchases of clothing and equipment ($1500), taxes on airline tickets which were obtained on points ($1200), other transport such as trains, rental car & gas, metro/tube, vaporetto, tolls ($4000), accommodations ($5000), food including restaurants, groceries, and snacks ($3000), entertainment and sightseeing ($2000), souvenirs and gifts ($2000), should come in at around $19,000, a little under the $20k we had expected.

The rest of the afternoon has been taken up writing in my journal, sipping wine, and playing with Stephane in the pool. It has been a thouroughly relaxing day and a great way to round out our lengthy vacation. Tonight we will enjoy salmon stakes, new potatoes, a fine salad, maybe a game of cards, and an early evening. Tomorrow we plan to pack the car before breakfast at 08h30, then on to the road for Rome.
