"We'd best get back, because it'll be dark soon, and they mostly come at night...... mostly" -- Aliens.
The overnight bus to Dubrovnik sucked about as much ass as you could reasonably expect. The bus was clearly designed for people in the five feet and under height bracket (not a growth market) and poor Vinny couldn't actually make contact with the headrest without dislocating his neck.
But, no matter, for by morning we were rubbing our necks and stretching our backs in the sun, the Adriatic lapping at our feet (well, it was a bus station actually but I'm going for a little artistic license here).
We negotiated with one of the touts at the station and he drove us to his guest house. The room was only ten quid a night so we were expecting to be sharing with thirty other people - as it turned out we had a twin room to ourselves, with bathroom, fridge and telly!
Things just work out for us....
Bit of a swim in the sea, followed by a nice bit of sunbathing - I was really starting to enjoy myself until three bearded Greenpeace activists stuck oars under me and tried to roll me back out to sea....
Later we went to the Old Town. It's this amazing medieval walled town by the water's egde. You can get up onto the walls and stroll around, and the views are breathtaking. Vinny took all the photos so there will be a lot of nice shots of impressive buildings and rather less photos of Germans being sick - and travelpod will be a better place for it.
Then a wonder around the town itself. No cars can get inside the walls so a pedestrian paradise. Thin alleys full of seafood restaurants threading through the tiled buildings. Marble streets slippery smooth from a billion footprints, and at dusk hundreds of Swallows take to the air on the hunt for bugs, whipping around your head and cooling you off.
Some of the town has been very recently rebuilt. This is because in 1991 Serbian and Montenegrin gunners decided to blow the shit out of it with a prolonged artillery bombarment. Dubrovnik had no military significance whatsoever.
They just wanted to destroy something beautiful.
Last night we went to watch the England game with our new friends from the place we were staying... Andy and Ellie from the UK and Matt and Cici from the US. Between us, and despite the fact that Andy was more than a little Scottish, we gave a sterling support to our boys as they unsuprisingly drew against Sweden. Michael Owen's injury is a bit of a concern for the future as it means Peter Crouch will carry on playing - and let's face it, he's a lanky useless twat. Honestly. And did you notice that nobody wants to pass to him because he's such a liability? And I'm sure he thinks he's five foot six.
But the result was great for us as it means we don't have to play Germany in the fourth round. If we had, we were going to go back to Germany to document and witness what was certainly going to be a full scale riot, no matter the result. As it is, we can just assume we're going to beat Ecuador which gives us another ten days to bum around Eastern Europe.
Anyway, tommorrow morning we're off to Mostar in Bosnia Herzergovena, and after maybe a night there we're going to Sarejevo. Not sure where after that, basically just doing a big loop around Eastern Europe to head back towards Germany eventually.
