Rather than the original Trans-Siberian which goes straight across Russia to Vladivostok, the Trans-Mongolian cuts down through (you guessed it) Mongolia to deposit you in Beijing.
We then figure on spending up to a month in China, depending on culture shock and financial position, taking in the likes of Shanghai and Xi'an. The we're going to cross the border into Laos, and head through Northern Thailand.
We figure that when we get down to Bangkok we're pretty much at the end of the first stage of the trip, and reserve the right to make up a completely new plan as the mood takes us. Neither Vinny or myself are particularly bothered about setting a definite plan or route and then sticking to it. In fact, the basic premise of this entire trip is 'just head east'.
If we've got any money left we'd like to spend some time in Vietnam and Cambodia. Although I've been here before Vinny hasn't and I never like to miss the opportunity to fire an AK-47. I'd also like to go back to Koh Phi Phi and make sure everyone I got to know when I was there before is OK post-tsunami. Of course, they won't remember me but that's just not the point.
Then south through Malaysia to Singapore, and from there it gets a little sketchy. Travelling to Australia by boat is not an easy thing to do, and may prove too difficult for our fragile nerves and bank balances. So we have resigned ourselves to the fact that we may end up flying from Singapore to Oz.... But if we DO, then when we leave Australia we want to fly BACK to wherever we fly from, and continue our overland journey. So it's NOT cheating, OK? It's just a holiday of sorts. True, it's a holiday that could last a year as we work to get a bankroll together again, but a holiday nonetheless.
After Oz there's always working in New Zealand, and after that, well, the rest is easy. We just want to travel back up through Asia, get to Hong Kong, get a cargo ship to America, get to LA, buy a car, drive across Route 66 to Chicago, go up to New York and then stow away on the QE2 to get safely home.
As this last bit is both rather ambitious and an extremely long way off, we haven't really thought it out any more than that.
So there we have it. I am absolutely sure that what we actually do will differ immensely from this plan, but like I said, I wanted to get it down so I can look back on it a year from now and say "You know what Vinny? Our plan would have worked if it wasn't for those meddling kids/wars/terrorist atrocities/border disputes/international drug barons/credit card companies...."
