We crawled out of our tents and found ourselves surrounded by unusual yellow, orange, and red rock formations that created a beautiful landscape. It was by far the most different landscape we had encountered. And in terms of climate, it was already 79 degrees by 9:30 a.m.! White volcanic ash, hot winds, and erosion all contributed to the making of the Badlands. The Badlands is a hot spot for paleontologists. Many fossils have been found here, including sabor tooth tigers and rhinos! I would have liked to walk around a little, but we had to get on the road to head east. We made a stop in Merdo, South Dakota at the Pioneer Auto Museum. What a collection this owner Jim had! He had some very rare cars. But he also had a collection of motorcycles, vaccuums, china, clothing, tractors, marine motors, etc. He even created an old town with old buildings including a homestead, one room schoolhouse, general store, blacksmith, dentist, jewlers, etc. I just can't believe how much stuff this guy had. After we looked around, it was off to Minnesota. We arrived around 7 p.m. We had no plans regarding where we would stay that night. Janis saw on his map a place called Kilen Woods State Park. So, we went there and to our disappointment its camping grounds were closed for the season. But we saw picnic tables and a grill so we decided let’s make dinner here. We had really good cheeseburgers with corn on the cob. But oh my goodness! The bugs were horrendous! There were so many. We were whacking our faces and the table. And we had already decided on just staying the night here. I was not very happy about the situation, but what were we going to do? It was getting late and we needed to sleep. So we set up the tents and went to bed. We were worried about being caught by a ranger for camping where we were not supposed to so Janis set his alarm for 6 a.m. We were all a little worried throughout the night. I had a dream where a creepy man came up to our tent in the middle of the night then we heard the sound of a dog parking getting closer and closer. Then at 3 a.m. we heard the sound of coyotes.
