Tomorrow is the big day! Janis, Niko (Janis' brother), Katrin (Niko’s wife), and I are leaving for our cross country trip. I arrived here at the Kelly’s house with Daphne at 11:30 a.m. from Long Beach. It took us exactly six hours to get here. We made excellent time! The first thing we did when arrived was unpacked my bag for Germany so Janis and I could combine our things in one large suitcase to be sent to our friend Krtista’s apartment in Washington DC. You might be asking yourself why send it if they can drive it? Let me remind you, there are four of us traveling in a very compact 1979 BMW and we barely have enough room as it is for our camping gear, clothing, accessories, etc., let alone the stuff we need for one month in Germany, especially in October when the weather starts to get cold! After enduring much nagging and criticism from Daphne and Edgar about the number of jackets I had planned on bringing with me, I finally agreed to part with a couple. Although, I must admit it was hard to do. I mean, I don’t like being cold. Plus, I have so many cute jackets, Anyways, we were finally able to close Janis’ large purple suitcase so it could be drive to be driven to the Fed Ex in our old stomping grounds in Berkeley. So we get out of the car and Janis drags the 56.7 pound bag about a block. Of course we leave the car without the address we need to send the bag to. So I go to the car to get that then Daphne and I  decide to go  into UPS to do make some price comparisons. Of course, when we get back to check on Janis’s status, it dawns on him that we forgot to put money in the meter. So I send Daphne with my ATM card to put some time on the meter. Now Janis and I are at the front of the line and I am supposed to pay, but now Daphne has my card. Then thank goodness I remember I have $100 in cash in my wallet. The people behind were definitely getting annoyed with us. And of course, I am nervous that our bag will open and my clothes will be lost so I decide to tape  up the suitcase even though two large straps are already holding it tight. After a couple of 'Fragile! Handle with care!’ stickers, we are off. The three of us had a quick bite to eat before departing for the city where Janis went to pick up Niko and Katrin from the airport, while dropping Daphne and me off so we could have a look around. We had a fabulous time. We started at the Embardero, taking a look in the Ferry building then heading up the hill to China Town On our way back, we passed through Little Italy (which I had never been through until yesterday) and we also found where Daphne’s wedding reception will be held, at the Palace Hotel’s Garden Tea Room. Daphne and I barted back into Oakland where we met everyone at  the Kelly’s favorite Chinese restaurant. This morning we woke up at 6 am to see Daphne off on her journey to Portland. After bidding her goodbye and escorting her to the freeway, Janis and I made a bagel run for the rest of the house.  With our stomachs satisfied, we went to work on the car. Niko and Janis repaired the back right window on the car and installed fog lights (which have yet to work) while Katrin and I cut out carpet for the trunk. At about 1 pm Janis and Niko left to look for spare parts at Pick N Pull while Edgar, Katrin, Pat and I went shopping at Nordstrom Rack. We then went to PacSun where Pat sent Katrin and I off with matching shirts. We then met up with John, Janis, Liam and Niko at the pool for  a late afternoon swim and dinner, which consisted of delicious Cheeseboard  pizza and salad.  It has been a long and pleasant day. I am looking forward to tomorrow. First stop, Crater Lake, Oregon.  But I know I will miss the Kelly’s company and hospitality!
