Made it to Auckland by way of DIA and LAX.  The total trip in in flight time was 14 hours and 30 minutes. With a little getting there time and hanging around at the various airports we ended up losing all of Thursday and are now blogging from Friday in New Zealand. Still Thursday (barely) for the people at home in Colorado.

Driving on the other side of the road was a good adventure for the sleep deprived and jet lagged. There should be some kind of transition... starting small by driving in the middle or something. If we had thought about it harder we would have opted for an automatic rather than manual tranny. Driving on the wrong side, shifting with the wrong hand and endlessly switching on the wipers when trying to indicate a turn made for a challenging drive. To make it more interesting, most roads are a narrow 2 lanes with very large trucks, often loaded with logs or petrol, barreling along at speeds that might not be the obvious choice for such hilly, winding terrain. So far, we believe we've only scared ourselves.

We had a nice visit at the North Shore Aero Club at the Dairy Flats Airport. We saw the Cessna 172 we will fly on Monday to get our American licenses validated for use in NZ. Watching the Cessna fly at sea level was awesome. The climb angle on take off was stunning and the approach was at a speed so slow it would have had to be a true STOL aircraft at our airport in Colorado's thin air. This dense air thing is great!

The B&B we chose in Paihia is living up to its reviews on Trip Advisor. Stunning view. Dinner was oysters & mussels on the wharf in town. We are just finishing a glass of NZ wine and ready to fall into bed--at the late hour of 8:30.
