After Harar, we decided to head south as we waited for Derartu Tulu to return from competing in New York City marathon. We didn't want to go back to Addis, so went most of the way back, stopping off at a wee town called Debre Zeit were we had heard rumours of DAIRY products available at a missionary farm. Dairy products are nearly unheard of in Ethiopia, we think because of lack of electricity. We hadn't come across any cheese or yoghurt in the entire 5 weeks here, and were gagging for it. We asked around town, and eventually, heard there was a farm 2.5km from town. We caught a taxi and walked the final mile, to find it CLOSED. We begged and begged the guard to no avail - we were told to come back the next day.

So, we woke up early and set off again. This time - joy! A big supermarket with FOOD! We bought cheese, yoghurt and frankfurters, and evenutally convinced the woman in the adjacent cafe to cook them up for us, as well as make us a SALAD! After 5 weeks of enjera everyday, we are completely over Ethiopian food and enjoyed pigging out on farangi food. A real treat for us :-)

Debre Zeit
Glad to see that Genesis Farms is going well. We visited in '03 for 2 weeks (have friends there) and it was just getting on it's feet.
