Day 16 - 18 August 2005
Belarus is one of the last country that has gained independence from the Soviet Union. We had to apply entry visa to pass by the country as it is the shortest way to the west. We processed the visa while we were on our short stay in Moscow as it cannot be done in Australia for they have no ambassador nor foreign representative. The same experience was repeated when we were entering the border of Russia but this time took a shorter period which was a relief.
The city of Vitebsk is uninteresting but they have one very good reason to be proud as Marc Chagall - the painter was born here. I am not a lover of surrealistic style in painting so when we were visiting the museum dedicated on his early work and sketches , most of us was totally bored. I guess from memory, some of his best work I have seen in the past was interesting enough but the ones on display here are like kids drawings. We were entertained better at the site of his former birthhouse as a talented violinist played a few lovely musical pieces while enjoying a refreshing Russian tea.
