After collecting our keys to the Suzuki 4 wheel drive at around 1130, went down to the nearby supermarket to grab some food for the road trip. We set off around 12, from Coyhaique towards Puerto Rio Tranquilo.

The moment we left the town, mountains greeted us with awe on all sides. The scenery was simply breathtaking, and we understood why the hostel owner told us we need to budget time for photo taking. We took several photo stops along the way. And also many photos of moving scenery on the car. Picturesque landscape all round.

After 2 hours, we entered the gravel path, away from the paved roads. God do I appreciate well paved roads back home. It was no joke navigating the car through these uneven terrain. We were in for a bumpy ride.

The landscape was drawn closer to us as we entered the curvy roads round the mountains. We witnessed the Patagonian microclimate in full swing: on one side of the road could be red-leaved temperate trees, while on the other were green-leaved rainforest. Higher up, snow capped mountains worked their magic, a real treat to see.

We stopped for lunch at a nice lookout point. The view was so surreal, it was asif we were in Middle Earth of Lord of the Rings. Good old bread and tuna kept us going, and we soon hit the road for more bends and potholes.

The sun was setting by half past six. And thankfully we arrived the town just as the day turned dark. Walked into hostel Costanera, which was the first we saw, and managed to haggle a room for 30000 per night for the 4 of us ($75).

Got the fireplace going, and the pot boiling. Pasta for dinner, another exciting day awaits.

Patagonia does live up to her expectations after all.
