So we arrived in Bundaberg at 10:30 and while on the train i took out my Lets Go Australia book and looked up Bundaberg many great tings were said about the place like....

"Bundaberg is not an exciting destination, most visitors get a coffee at the terminal, stretch their legs, and hop back on board... it is a reliable source of short term farm work, many of those who do stay for work, however, complain about worker exploitation since the preponderance of eager labourers ensures fast turnover, some workers last a day ( me and dnaielle) and others last months. Unfortunatley, locals and backpackers have a tense relationship, meaning that nearly all social events are held within the hostels"

After reading this i was absolutley filled with joy! NOT the taxi driver took us to our working hostel, we checked in and some people who had been working at the hostel told us what it was like, we heard nothing but good things about citrus picking and they heard of people earning 900 dollars a week, highlight the word HEARD, so yeah we were pretty confident we could do well and make some money, we didnt actually start work till saturday so we had all of friday to ourselves, where we just chilled out by the pool and i played football for most of the day!

The way the hostel works is every night at 7.30pm they put up the work list! This has everyones name on it and it tells you what farm you are going to work on and what you will be doing either picking or packing in the sheds... so friday the list went up and i was on zunchinni picking and danielle was on pruning(picking capsicums) people were asking what i was on and i was like zuchinni picking, and the first reaction i got from people was their faces scrunching up so i could tell it was going to be a cunt of a job!!! I had to wake up at 4.45am and be on the bus at 5.20am.. we got dropped off at the zuchinnni farm at around 6am to start... on arrival i was given my tags with a number on it identifying me and a blunt piece of shit knife to cut the zuchinni from the plants, the score was...... we had to fill up a 20 litre bucket with zuchinnis and we get between $2.80 - $3.00 a bucket and beacasue it was my first day i was dead keen and up for it! So off we went picking like crazy PICK PICK PICK bending over back getting raped to pieces, i got off to a flyer filled 3 buckets in the first 20 mins... the row i was on was a gold mine lol after i was onto the next row and there was hardly anything worth picking on it!!! SHITE so i just kept battling on and worked like hell till 9am when the farmer decides that we have picked enough and was time to go home! WHAT 3 hours work!! no use lol i picked about 12 buckets.... so i made about $36 dollars for the day. not so good, the farmer then turns around when we were signing out and says as it was out first day he would just out us on hours... waste of time going like the clappers...

Anyway we were all wating for the bus to come back and pick us up to take us back to the hostel, we had left all of our bags at the side of the road then out of no where this brown looking snake had slithered it's way from the field and was coming to investigate our bags, me and the irish lad decided to keep well back, the japs on the otherhand decided to start belting rocks and zuchinnis at the snake!! the snake was getting well adgitated and was coiling up a bit and hissing, then the japanese boy tried to pick up  the snake going dead cose to it the snake took a lunge at him and he shat himself and jumped back! then another one o them took a run and jumped over the top of him, the snake was hissing and going mad.... so then the farmer pulls around the corner in his van and i pulled him over and asked what kind of snake he was, he was like " WHOA boys get away from him, hes a brown snake, most deadliest snake in australia, he can run faster than you can, he bites you and you will be dead in 15 mins and the nearest hospital is 45 mins away" even after saying this the japanese boy still went into the field picked up a rotten zuchinni and belted it off the snake, the snake just hisssed again and off he went, luckily for us he wasnt up for biting us! was crazy lol mad i thought them boys were! so it was a pretty funny day!! Danielle didnt really get on any better she only worked from 6am to 11am so not much hours either, pish

So that day the list went back up on the board at 7.30pm and now we were both going to be on zuchinni picking! when we started wrking we just set off at a stready pace and all the locals were picking like hell! after about a hour there wasnt much good zuchinnis to pick just small little black ones so the supervisor comes over to us and puts us onto hourly rate, 16.60an hour he said ! not so bad i guess!! so about ten mins later the farmer comes over and says ok guys your on 12.25 an hour! im like what!! no way im not working for that fuck that, so i just slowed right down gettin the crack with danielle, next thing you know we are getting shouted at by the locals and the supervisors " HURRY UP" "HURRY UP" not for fucking 12.25 an hour i was thinking lol so we just sat down and went on strike shortly after! Your arms get covered in mad rashes from the pescticides they spary on the zuchinnis i came out with laods of red lumps right the way up my arm, heavy duty! fckin disaster, so we decided to get the hell out of the hostel. The lady that runs the place is psycho at morning times she would be shouting SWEET POTATOES HURRY UP UR LATE HURRY UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the place is like a prison! So we decided to leave, we escaped,we put our bags in a shopping trolly each and legged it down to the train station! YAY goodbye fucking bundaburg! The best thing about it was the train out!
