Melbourne Oasis YHA

Our original plan was to spend the last night close to Melbourne before returning the campervan in the city. In our desperate search for a campground, we got dangerously close to Melbourne and its outskirts. Before we knew it, we were in St Kilda enjoying an ice-cream in the sun. "Accidents always happen" as they say - so, instead of spending a final night in the "Jesus Fish", we checked in early at the YHA Oasis in Northern Melbourne.

As usual, it turned out to be a wise decision as we were able to avoid the morning traffic in Melbourne (and getting lost and late on the way in) as well as we were able to take our time getting our stuff out of the camper (which didn't prevent us from losing some bread and my head torch between the camper and the YHA - it is still a mystery).

After 9 days in a campervan, having a proper bed is a heavenly luxury. Needless to say, we had a brilliant sleep. Returning the campervan after a small sightseeing trip around Northern Melbourne involved a quick farewell to our "Jesus Fish" and it was over. We then explored the city starting from the Queen Victoria Market, having brekkie and walking down Queen Elizabeth Street. Noble finally got to give me my birthday gift (a Crumpler laptop bag) which we then celebrated with Chinese lunch and a pint in a local pub.

After enjoying the Police Band at Federation Square, we enjoyed the afternoon sun at the Yarra River. We slowly walked back to our YHA. Along the way we stopped at the Central YHA to check if Noble's lost airplane pillow was sent from Sydney - but this one seemed to be lost forever. We had a not-so-yummie cup noodles as our "last supper" before going to bed. We had yet another early flight back to Hong Kong meaning we had to get up at 4.30am!

We both liked Melbourne very much - it felt like Sydney 10 years ago ... It is a relaxing city with not as many attractions as Sydney. It is however very laid-back and having spent 7 weeks in NZ (100% nature) and 10 days in a campervan, we needed a more relaxed environment!
