A short flight from Moscow (though with some of the most annoying security checks ever), our second stop in Russia was in St. Petersburg. The city is completely different from Moscow...much more European and pedestrian friendly, with lovely canals dividing some of the streets. We visited the incredible Hermitage, and wandered through hundreds of rooms looking at paintings and sculptures for almost 6 hours; long, but a really great day! We also visited the Kazan cathedral and the beautifully decorated Church of our Saviour (similar to St. Basil's), the Peter and Paul Fortress (where the last Tsar is buried...and also where we had an interesting chat with a Russian cleaner), and nearby and gorgeous Peterhof, with hundreds of beautiful fountains.

In St. Petersburg, we also fell victim to local police who gave Sebastian a ticket because Fiona had decided to take a picture of a Lenin mosaic inside the metro system (apparently not allowed)...the fine was minimal, but the scars will surely last a lifetime.
