After being with Joe and his roommates did I decide to try to go to New Orleans. It took me a lot of time with pubilc transportaion just to get out of LA - so I ended up with taking a train the last way to San Bernardino. It was kind of late when I got there and I hat to walk for a while to get to the ramp to I-10 (the interstate). I thougt that the opportinuties for getting a ride on the ramp were bad - so I went down on the freeway, because then maybe I could get a ride from a cop if if were lucky. And after 10 min were my exspectations improved and a cop came and gave me a ride (after of course telling me that I were not supposted to be on the freeway) to a little truckstop. He told me that it was a "crabby place" and he wouldn't recomment me to hitchhike here - but I didn't want to be scared and I had no other choice.
I tried to hitchhike from the ramp near the truckstop, butwithout luck. So I went back to the truckstop to ask some truckers if I could get a ride.
A woman (Gloria) came and asked me for a cigaret - wich I didn't have - and when I asked her if she knew a place that I could get to NO and told her that I were hitchhiking. She stared telling me that she couldn't accept that as a mother and then it ended up with me sleeping in their (Gloria and her 9 year old son) truck - they lived at the truckstop, because her husband was in jail for some reason I never understood. I tried to catch a ride out of the truckstop town. It was just impossible, or maybe I didn't have enough patience that day, but after some hours in the son and someones throwing a cup of cola after me I decided to find a truck. After a lot of denies I found a guy who would have to drive North, then come back and then go East as I wanted to... To make one more long story shot; I ended waiting for him (is was first in the night) and then a guy in his car came and asked me if I was lot, but i told him that I just was looking for at ride. He said that he could drive me to a truckstop nearby - but I think his intentions were some others; cause after 5 min he invited me home to his hotelroom, so we could watch some porn and sniff some speed together... but I refused the offer and said that i prioriteded New Orleans more. And fortunatly was the drive short - so afterwards I could think of it as a "funny" experince.
At the new truckstop I went to the store and asked for a "place to hang out", because I wanted to talk to some trucker - but the store manager just kicked me out... and then I was in a difficult get-a-ride-situation again. I tried to find good places to get a ride and tried to hitch a bit... but I didn't have the determination to wait long enough for a ride. So agian did I have to stay a wake for the most of the night, undtil about dusk next morning. Where I went into the truckstop agian and went around to ask someones - and then finally I found a czech trucker, Lubos, who I ended up with spending two days with. He had to do 5 pick-ups of fruit in Yuma, Arizona, but I was desperate to get out of California.. . so I accepted to long waiting time. He has worked 5 years as a illegal worker to get a greencard, so he would be able to drive in a truck.
I've thought that I could sleep in his truck that night, but before his last pick-up he started to talk about; that when we came to the last pick-up I could go out and find a place to sleep. But it was just too cold outside, I didn't have a sleeping pad and my summer-sleeping-bag would be too cold. Therefore I just started to sleep in the truck on the seat, and at last he fortunatly said that I could sleep on the floor in the truck, if "if I were not doing any stupid things" - so he must have been scared of me, but I understand that.
We drove from Yuma next morning and drove the most of the next day thru the next of Arizona, New Mexico and only barely crossed the texan boarder to a truckstop outside El Paso. Here we got a shower and something to eat, he wanted to stay there for the night and I felt kind of ready to hitchhike more, though it was 9pm or some. I didn't wanted to ask him if I could sleep in his truck for one more night, cause he had been so strange about it the day before. So this was where our roads splitted... The story continues in the next "entry"...
