Wow, what a day!
After recovering from yesterday's 360k drive, we slept the Sleep of the Just....not the Sleep of the Just-After.....too tired!
We slept in until 1040, and even then it was an effort to get showered and ready for out.
We just drifted along whatever road we found ourselves on, and entered the Picos de Europa National Park.
What dramatic scenery we encountered!
I've walked and climbed all over the UK, and travelled through the Pyrenees and the Alps, but I've never seen mountains so challenging in my life! I must read up on them, because they are so different.
We turned off the main road and found one that just went up and up and up......
We ended in a village called Cunaba, at a bar called Bar Sanchez.
It was just like 'The Slaughtered Lamb' in the film 'An American Werewolf in London'. There were three inhabitants, an unsmiling old Senora behind the bar, an old geezer sat behind the open door who frightened the life out of me, and what I took to be the village idiot chugging down a beer.
Oh, and don't forget the farting dog!
It stunk like a ......farting dog! It was laid in front of the fire, which, fortunately was out!
I dread to think what it's like in winter, with the door shut and the fire roaring!
I had a coffee, and C had a Vino Blanco. My coffee was powdered, from a sachet, and C's wine was ....let's say, past it's best.....we sat outside, and two thirsty hikers went in.....they lasted less than we did! Hey ho.....On the winding road is evidence of loose rocks and boulders coming down from the heights. Holes in the road, and piles of rock where they have been cleared!
After that, we went to Fuente De, an Alpine style mountain resort, complete with cable-car going up to the heights from which you can do three high level walks. It made my feet itch, I can tell you, but those days are long gone and I've all on to walk round Tesco these days!
After the late start, we ran out of time and we will try to return tomorrow. At least, we are going back into the park tomorrow. Where we actually end up is in the lap of the gods!
Just to end the day, we decided to eat out.
Ha! The Spaniards in this neck of the woods certainly cater for tourists, as long as they are Spanish Tourists! Not one of the four restaurants that we went into, at 1930, was serving food before 2030! We ended up in a Pizza bar, which was OK, but not what we wanted.
One last thing......
I've ranted on about the driving skills, or otherwise, of the Portuguese and Spanish Senoritas.
Take it from me that these Moustachioed Muppetts are LETHAL!
At least French women KNOW that they are bad: they don't see the need to improve or alter, so they don't.
These poltroons don't even KNOW how bad they are, which makes them worse!
Beware, especially on narrow roads in gorges, with a drop on one side and a rock face on the other.....El Bimbo Stupido is coming towards you!
Ciao!
