The 3 ½ hour bus ride from Valdivia to Villarrica cost 2100 pesos each. A 5-minute ride by taxi (1000 pesos) brought us to the last available room at the Hosteria de la Colina, situated high up on the hill, overlooking magnificent views of Lago Villarrica and Volcán Villarrica from the terrace (though no such views from our $65/night).
Nonetheless, the hotel and surrounding gardens are very clean, with a quaint bar and a living room filled with books, music and 100 year old magazines! The staff speaks English (ex-pats) and is very helpful in arranging local tours to the waterfalls, hot springs and other activities.
Caroline and I just lazed around reading for a couple of hours before heading to their restaurant. A good bottle of Shiraz accompanied my steak and Caroline's fish - a great meal, reasonably priced.
By 10:30pm were soaking in the wooden hot tub, sipping the last of our wine and simply enjoying the moment together. No stars to be seen tonight; maybe tomorrow night....
