Where I stayed
Killarney town center
This was one of the first mornings in Ireland that I woke up before my alarm went off, because the sun was actually shinning through my window. The first picture was the start to my wonderful day! I walked outside my apartment and I could actually see all the mountains that surround Killarney.
During the school day and evening it began to rain and rain and rain...but this didn't stop us from going out for a bit...
Went to bed.
Friday, February 11th
I went to school. Rode my bicycle home from school and took a cat nap. I woke up and got dressed because our school had a VERY LARGE retirement dinner party at the fabulous Malton Hotel
Saturday, February 12th
It rained all day long so I went to the grocery store and stayed in most of the day working on school assignments. Megan came back from Cork and her and Shannon came over for dinner. I made chicken fajitas! David had mentioned he ate fajitas earlier in the week and I couldn't seem to get them out of my mind. After dinner the three of us go into town for some weeknight pubbing and live Irish music...check out the video.
Sunday, February 13th
We ate lunch at a tasty little sandwich & smoothie shop
Megan and I walked far outside of town in search of an Irish rugby jersey. Ireland was playing France in rugby...unfortunately they lost by a few points (3, I think). After that, we decided to have a photo shoot of ourselves in our new Irish rugby gear. I went home and put together my lesson plan and presentation on America for my classes the next day.
Monday, February 14th --My 24th Birthday -Valentine's Day
My day began grand because I didn't have to ride my bike to school since I had 30 tissue boxes in my bags to carry. So I had the taxi pick me up. It was a very nice day. I walked into my teacher's classroom to put my bag down and my teacher greets me with a big hug, a card, and a wrapped present! :) I was definitely not expecting any of those things...After all, I had only been teaching for 2 weeks. She had written "HAPPY BIRTHDAY CASSIDY" on the white board and had all her students sign it!
I go into my morning room with second class and they all sing me happy birthday in Gaelic
My presentation was supposed to be on myself and my country. Since it was my birthday and valentines day, I decided to teach the kids what American primary schools do on this terrific holiday. Irish students have never used tissue boxes to make their own Valentine mailboxes to receive their cards in. So I brought them in and my senior infants each got to make their very own mailbox. They absolutely loved it! They made cards for each other and thought it was the greatest when someone dropped a card into their mailbox :) The students also made me sooo many birthday and Valentine cards for my box. It was definitely a success!
Lunch time came around and I finally made it to the staff room to find a bouquet of red flowers from my amazing mom and dad, 3 birthday/valentine cards, and a homemade cake from my teacher...with candles and everything! All of the teachers sang happy birthday to me as I starred at the cake thinking of a wish and had an enormous smile on my face! The people of Killarney and especially St. Oliver's really know how to make someone feel right at home.
When school was out..I walked all the way home with my gorgeous flowers in their large glass vase. I arrived at my apartment door surprised to find more gifts and cards! Thank you family for my amazing Birthday/Valentine cards
GREAT BIG IRISH THANKS TO MY AMAZING FAMILY:
Mom & Dad ...I can't possibly thank you enough for everything you have already given me!
After opening all of my cards..I had one large box to open :) The address was from a Mr.David Harrison!!! I opened up to find a large stuffed teddy bear holding a box of Irish chocolates! David you are the greatest Valentine! Thank you for realizing I needed something fuzzy to cuddle with that could take the place of Higgins for a few months!
I LOVE YOU ALL!!
After opening cards and presents... I skyped with my parents and my Valentine.
Megan came over and we went for a long long adventure into the park. Took lots of pictures. Dad, I finally found a straw roof for you. Red Deer are native to Killarney. Returned to my place and we met up with Lene for my birthday dinner at the Laurels! Might be my favorite pub food in Killarney! We cheers-ed our Guinness and left the pub happy and stuffed! We went to the Grand for some Irish music and another live band. We met a big group of Australian friends that were in town for the night...they were touring Ireland in 6 days on something called the "Paddy Wagon"...best name ever for a large Irish tour bus business!
My birthday wish came true...I had an extra sunny birthday (literally and metaphorically)!
HAPPY VALENTINES TO ALL...AND TO ALL A GOODNIGHT!
