We spent about a week trekking through Hinchinbrook Island.
We walked from North to South. In hindsight I think you are meant to walk the other way and this is why. After having crossed the knee deep creek, I noticed the timber signboard on the side of the south bank. It read: "Danger, beware of crocodiles". I wish this board existed on the north bank as well!!! Not that there was any other option but to cross over anyway!
Now, I've been to a few places and have seen a few things... But the full days walk up the wild boulder creek to the top of Mount Bowen was "bloody" amazing. This was one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for me. Sure you can go and do it again, but you have to sort out the logistics of getting to and off the island, getting the limited availability access permits for the summit, etc, etc, etc. Waking up on top of the saddle and looking out my tent down the 900m to the ocean below was amazing. Oh, how I'd love to go back...
This is one of those Special Places. I have detailed track notes if anyone is interested. Highly recommended!!!
The group was fantastic, so thanks to Adrian for organising this.
And Ron, for God's sake, you don't HAVE to carry a 80L backpack weighing 35kg!!!
