Isle de Ometepe is across Lago de Nicaragua. It was formed by two volcanoes rising out of the sea. The lush highland scenery is almost completely unspoilt, despite the fact that it gets a steady stream of visitors.
The two volcanoes are Conception, rising 1610 metres above sea level and Maderes, rising 1394 metres above sea level.
The roads and accommodation are rough and ready.

The Road
The twin engines belch as the skipper guides the boat into the island. Taxi drivers and touts fight for business and in our case, our taxi driver won.
The battered old 4wheel drive land rover thunders under the moonlight. The light displays shadows of the car, as it grinds up the dusty dirt road dodging potholes big enough to break a car's suspension. There were seven of us; the car so crowded that we had two people on each seat. With the car jiggling this way and that, I felt like my kidneys were getting more bruised with each bump.
On the whole trip we slowed down once and that was only to let a poor defenceless dog sprint away from the middle of the road. Miniature skinks chatter nervously to each other but I bet they are not as nervous as me with my inside wobbling around the place.
The driver gunned the accelerator in the hope that he might reach the top of the hill. His efforts weren't in vain and soon enough he reaches the top of the hill and we drive to the Parque Central where local teens battle over the concrete of the basketball court. At around nine o'clock we headed in to the safety of the waiting hotel.
