Flag of Japan  , Kinki,
Thursday, June 24, 2010

After arriving in Kyoto and checking into our hotel we went to Heian Jingu. This shrine honors the first and last emperors of Japan to reign while Kyoto was the capital. The shrine is a small copy of the original imperial palace in Kyoto. Even though it really isn't very old it is quite pretty, but the real highlight is the garden located behind the shrine. It is a real beautiful tranquil spot in the middle of this busy city.

Unfortunately, I forgot my camera, so I hope some students update this with pictures. One of the special things you can do in the garden is cross the pond by a path of separate stones. Once on a guided tour I was told 20 people fall in each year and I jokingly mention this fact to our students. Well, this year JW got to see it first hand as an elementary student following behind fell in. We were disappointed that JW didn't snap a picture.

Next we went to the Kyoto Handicraft Center to continue our shopping binge. An hour and a half later, we know have swords and even more amazing souvenirs. I'm starting to wonder how they are going to get this stuff to Tokyo, and I can't even imagine getting on the plane back home.

After everyone went out for dinner, we went walking in Gion, one of the traditional districts of Kyoto. Before we even got to there the students saw a man who did caricatures, so we stopped to have a couple done. Afterward we walked into the Yakasa Shrine. Unfortunately, the pictures didn't come out well.

Cool, new swords to bring home! Better start looking into how to ship them from Japan...

So, no one from FHS fell in! Impressive. Most impressive. :-) Must prove that you all have pretty good balance!
Hope you're all absorbing lots of culture. :-)
