We loaded the vans, got ready to bounce and word came down that Brazilian visas had not been obtained for the band by the promoters. I went thru my own drama obtaining mine in LA prior to the trip. With that having been said we settled into the hotel lobby, turning it into a quasi lounge / office as laptops came out, coffee was poured and the conversation turned to politricks, road life and the desire to enter the dragon: Brazil.
After about 4 hours of this the flights to & shows in Rio were cancelled and personnel went into over drive to secure visas @ the consulate. We split into two groups, band & crew, and checked into separate hotels till all could be sorted out at the Brazilian consulate. Now this band I truly love with all the passion I have for life and music, however the crew...these guys have an agenda and it closely mirrors my own. Please put me in the crew hotel!!!!!
The promoter also worked really hard to get us all tickets to the national soccer match between Mexico and Argentina (Boca Juniors) but unfortunately it was sold out. That would have been crazy...a soccer game in Argentina with Diego Maradona in attendance. Next time I'm in Argentina I will attend a soccer match. BTW...Boca Jrs. Won 3-0.
Left to my own devices I linked up with the crew again and headed out to dinner in the plaza near our hotel at a sidewalk café. A local lady of the evening named "Anaie" invited herself and joined our table for dinner, crazy shit like that happens in Buenos Aires. When we decided to bounce and link with our friend she was very disappointed there were no takers in our group . Sorry but I think she needs a new marketing plan.
We hooked up with a bredren and headed to a neighborhood called Plaza Serrano. We were rolling with Hernan the lead singer of the previous night's opening band called Holy Piby. We went on a crazy drive thru Buenos Aires, I felt like I was in a video game as Hernan is driving, talking, lighting a chalice, and f#@ckin with the radio. Oh..he also informed us that he did not have a valid driver's license as we passed a sobriety check point. Long Beach Dub All-stars will never sound the same to me again...I swear. Mind you we are going out...this is all happening at 1am in the morning...just starting!!!
Great neighborhood once we got there, lots of restaurants, bars and beautiful people kicking it @ 1am. South Beach without the steroids. We settled into "The Beat house" on the upstairs level, asked them to play our reggae music (which they obliged) and took it all in.
Next thing you know I'm approached and asked where I am from and if I am famous (must be a will smith thing). I give up the info (From CA & depending on who you ask I could be somebody) and the next thing you know our party of 5 is now a party of 15 "portenos", indigenous female creatures of this beautiful city called Buenos Aires. Turns out it is Augustina's birthday, who's turning 18 so naturally, being the gentlemen we are we buy a drink for the birthday girl. Long story short....we had a great time, I was asked to marry a 17 year old girl's mother and later on our way to the hotel we passed two guys playing quarters against a wall and I asked to play. Well one immediately started talking some nationalist bullshit so I took on the challenge with some good ole rasta bravado and kicked that ass on one toss. Being the righteous Black man that I am I even let him keep his "peso".
It's a wrap...overall a great day and tomorrow if all goes well with the visas we enter the dragon: San Paulo Brazil.
