June 1 - Versailles

Navigated the metro like pros and made our way to Avis to pick up a rental car and drove to Versailles. Our exit came up so quickly on the Boulevard Périphérique Extérieur (or the Intérieur) ring road that we missed it and ended up back very close to our Paris hotel and the Arch de Triomphe. We got back on again with some work and a tight u-turn from John and were soon at the centre square in Versailles and the Hotel Chaval Rouge, a cute hotel from the 17th century. The village of Versailles (now a suburb of Paris) is still very quaint.

We saved the last day of our museum pass for Palais de Versailles http://en.chateauversailles.fr/homepage or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_Versailles and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Not only is Versailles an amazing building, it is also steeped in royal history and the complimentary (surprise) audio tour was enjoyable even among the throngs of tourists and school children packed in the rooms.

June 2 - Giverny

What a way to celebrate Dan's birthday but he should have been here with us! I loved Monet's Garden at the village of Giverny and took about 150 pictures with our camera and thousands more with my eye camera! So, so beautiful but did we have to pick a bank holiday (Asuncion Day) in France to visit? There is nothing to say except to view the pictures as we think they are lovely, especially from the small travel camera we have with us (though never as good as the eye camera). The traffic and lack of parking is crazy and we were to find out that this is the same throughout France. Forgot to mention the birds! Not only at Monet’s Garden but throughout France it was so wonderful to hear the birds singing. I think the last time we really noticed birds was Australia.
