It was an experience picking up the rental car with our brand new camping gear and then driving on the wrong side of the road out of Melbourne. But with John's great driving and my excellent navigating - stay left, stay left - we made it to the Prom.
First stop, The Prom, aka Wilson's Promontory. Man, this is definitely God's Country! Not only that, a family of kangaroos and a flock of 30 emus posed for us on the way out of the park.
We, well John, managed to drive safely out of Melbourne. Fortunately we our car rental was an automatic as driving on the left side of the road presents enough problems in itself. Arrived at Wilson’s Promontory and promptly set up our tent which we had purchased in Melbourne. We then put a bottle of wine in our backpack and hiked to Pillar Point. As the sun was setting we raised our bowels of wine (didn’t have glasses) and made a toast to Australia as it was her birthday. Perhaps John’s sipping had something to do with the crooked sunset pictures. We woke up in the middle of the night to rain pounding on our tent and with wind of considerable accompanying it. Fortunately the tent did its job and we remained dry. In the morning you would never had known that there was anything but perfect weather all night. The rest of our camping experience in Australia was as the saying goes "a piece of cake."
