So after meeting up with Servane and Domitille again, we headed to Sanur to get a boat to Nusa Lembongan - a place famed for diving with Manta rays, Sun fish and for getting wiped out on lethal shallow coral while surfing some monster waves. As before we stuck with the local transport in order to save money and meet some locals, but also because we like sweating a lot on leather seats in a crowded bus with your rucksack on your lap.
We arrived and were told that the regular slow (cheap) boat had already left and as there were no more for the rest of the day we would need to take the private jet boat for 20 times the price. Was that the truth...who knows. You never know the truth. But we didnīt cave...we resisted and after trying to bargain a bit we opted to walk away and head to Lombok a few days early and vivit the Gili islands.
So we got back into a bemo and headed for Padangbai and our ferry to Lombok. When we got to the port we picked up some tickets and then I made a bad decision. I listened to my stomach and it told me to get a toasted sandwich even though the ferry was due to leave in 15 mins. I started to get a bit anxious when the ferry gave a few blasts of its horn but the kind lady reassured me that my sandwich was toasting and the ferry was not due to leave for another 10mins. A few painstaking minutes later the ferry did in fact leave with Servane and Dom on board. When I looked at the sandwich bar proprieter with a sad face she used some reassuring words in English..."Its OK".
I didnīt believe her at first but indeed there was another boat and after only 4 more hours. So I hung out with the yocals for a while and took some stares. I made some friends from Brunei with whom I had an incredibly painful 7 hour conversation in broken English (how do you cut it off politely?). The ferry did leave...this time with me on board and after the 5 hr crossing I did make it to Lombok. But by then it was late, very late. I rebuffed the offers from taxi drivers in Lembar to drive me across the island and opted for a night in a grotty losmen in the port town. This got me some sleep and I awoke a bit fresher the following day for more public transport haggling and the journey north.

Oh and by the way the toasted sandwich was pretty good.
