Apart from waking to stumble groggily to the toilet I didn't fully gain consciousness until two in the afternoon on Monday. I spent the rest of the day dozing, my nose was rubbed raw from mopping up the constant flow of snot and my head was throbbing despite having drunk about five litres of water and lemon juice. Felix had more of a challenge on his hands though. When we stopped for a break yesterday morning Felix noticed the back tyre was a bit too far worn, so we (by 'we’ I mean Felix) had the almost impossible challenge of finding tyres in Italy, where we spoke not a word of Italian. So while I spent the afternoon moping in bed, Felix was flat out trying to find tyres. When Aurelia came home from school she was a good help having a little Italian speaking skills. But at the end of the day, despite all the effort, reading, visiting mechanics and phone calls we were no closer to finding tyres.

After an unrestful sleep punctuated by nose blowing, toilet visits and dreams that were more surreal, disturbing and out of proportion than usual last night, I woke feeling a little better and spent some time out of bed cooking breakfast, lunch, going to the supermarket and doing little bits and pieces to regain some order after landing in a messy heap on Sunday night. Felix was again non-stop looking for tyres. He called all the way to the UK and France, all calls leading in a useless circle. The hard thing is you see, the tyres Nina needs are an unusual size and need a very high load bearing capacity.

Finally, with no one else left to call, Felix called our friend Harry from the Ural wholesale dealership in Austria. He put us onto a lead he thought would be successful – a Ural dealer in Cremona, two hours ride from Torino. He said " They have Illaria, she is English speaking, she has good English skills" and despite Felix’s attempt to call her ending in the phone being hung up on him twice and Aurelia’s attempt ending with them saying they had no tyres, finally when Stefano called them from Pian Di Sco’ for us when nearly all other hope was lost, yes, they did have tyres and the ones we wanted. Finally! What a relief, after more than a day of searching we had gotten somewhere, I can’t believe it, I had really lost hope.

We plan to leave tomorrow very early to ride to Cremona, replace the tyres, spend one last night camping in Italy then cross into Switzerland, over the Alps and meet Jan, a relative of Felix, at his mountain cottage where we will spend a few days relaxing and exploring the mountains.

Before going to bed we went for a long walk with Aurelia around Torino’s suburbs, then we set a six thirty alarm and now will go straight to sleep.

No photos says michi, oh and you can say how funny it was that they hang up on you but that they had the tires you need (MAria).
