Yesterday we left Sankt Marein and went to stay with Flo and Andrea in Graz.
Our first outing yesterday was to IKEA to buy a new mattress with Flo and Andrea. After meeting up with Ber (a friend of Michi who is one of the people Felix really looked forward to seeing again in Europe and who works at IKEA) I experienced for the first time an IKEA restaurant. It was a buffet, but not all you can eat. You collected a plate and went through the cafe choosing what you wanted and made your own salad then as you left they weighed everything. In the store it was amazing how exactly the same as the Richmond store in Australia this one was. Inside I almost forgot I was in Austria, and when I came out and we hopped in the car and started driving on the Austrian side of the road I was a bit surprised.
After IKEA we went and looked around the Steiner school in Graz where Flo and Michi went to school. It was lovely to see that just like IKEA is the same halfway round the world, so are Steiner schools. We met an old teacher of Flo who was carving a sculpture out of a five tonne piece of sandstone. It was beautiful the way the sculpture was emerging out of the block of stone.
The next destination was Flo's family home for their annual extended family reunion and Easter feast. Where they live is an interesting place because it is a little housing community set up by an architect where people could build their house from wood to look anyway they wanted so there are many beautiful houses, mostly very Steiner looking. We spent the night being stuffed to the brim with the yummy feast and enjoying the company of Flo's friendly family.
So, that was yesterday, now today. We slept in and had a leisurely morning. In the afternoon Flo took Felix and I to a bead shop in the city, to collect number two of three yellow things for our treasure hunt. (One of three is a yellow Murauer beer coaster, collected a little earlier.) We bought very small yellow beads that I made into a bracelet.
We then had a walk through Stadt Park. It's quite funny hey, Floss, Felix and Flo, if any one asked our names they'd think we were joking or something. In the park we met a man tightrope walking who let us have a try. We then went to a nice little beer garden called 'Parkhaus' and sat for a while drinking a beer, well the boys had a beer I had a very expensive mineral water
After the beers we continued walking though the garden. It is very beautiful at the moment, Spring is here and all the gardens are bursting into colour and the fountains and water features have been cleaned, filled with fresh water and turned back on after Winter. Here we found the third of the three yellow things, a big, bright, beautiful, yellow Pansy. Every time I see it I say 'Aah ya Pansy.'
When we got home, Andrea and Flo's sister Magdalena were baking bread. Felix and I watched 'A Knights Tale' and I made the yellow bracelet and Felix made a very big key ring for Nina with the bright and odd assortment of beads he had chosen in the bead shop. Soon the bread was ready so we had a dinner of fresh bread with cheese, meat, some homemade dips and all the rest.
Now we are about to go out to meet Schurli and Ronnie. We are planning to go only for a few hours but with those two and no good reason to come home early and get a good sleep because all the places we wanted to go tomorrow are still closed for winter, I think it might end up more then just a few hours.

Maria on

Hey, I want to know what the 'and the rest' was in your dinner of bread, meat and cheese - sounds intriguing! Good to hear you're busy on the treasure hunt. Are you liking it? And yes, isn't it a bit freaky how inside an IKEA anywhere it's identical? I couldn't believe it after I'd first been in IKEA in Sweden, and then saw all the same things here in Melbourne.

I'm sitting out in our back yard near the chooks, reading out loud to Edwin who is hacking away at the ivy in the secret garden with his machete from Chananaw, and Jelly is listening in from under the pumpkins where she's doing her homework. It's so nice, we really feel as if you're right here, when we read/listen to the blogs. This might be it for now though, we're off to have lunch with Heiner and Karen Karst now...

Lots of love,

M&E
