We spent the day with Herbert. He took us to the Black Forest (Schwarz Wald) and showed us where my Great, Great Grandmother Sophie had lived. We also went to a spot where Mum and Granny had come when they were in Germany. We went for a beautiful walk in the forest. It was really magical walking through the forest half covered with snow. I was really happy to walk in snow, even if it was melting a bit and mostly icy. There were beautiful mosses coming through the snow and a perfect little creek running through the trees, over rocks and sand. Sophie had caught fish with her hands in this creek back in the day. As we drove along, every town was like it was from a fairly tale. I kept expecting to come to one that wasn't so magical but, no. We were on top of a mountain and as we drove down we looked over one nestled in a valley. Postcard material. We stopped again at the top of another mountain and had a snow fight but apparently it wasn’t very good snow for snow fights, so I’m looking forward to "good snow" where we can build trenches and dugouts.

For lunch we stopped at a stable and ate in a little hut. It had a beer vending machine inside! Herbert had brought Pretzels and Wurst Salat. This is another meal that is a rare, delicious treat at home but seems to be quite common here – most meals are turning out to be like this. It’s SO GOOD!!! Then we went to a Schnapps Brenner (distillery) owned and run by Jurgen, a friend of Herbert. It was really cool to see, Felix was a lot more interested then me but I was still pretty impressed. The distillery is a very 'mad scientist’ looking contraption, it has all these tubes and pipes going everywhere and a big copper boiler. Jurgen and his son were very kind to us and showed us how everything worked. Like everywhere we go, we were offered beer, and of course being a schnapps distillery we were also offered plenty of delicious schnapps. I was really feeling jetlag and as you can guess, the mix of schnapps and jetlag is not good. By 7pm Felix and I were passed out in bed. Ute woke us up for dinner and it was so hard to wake up. Only once before have I felt this tired. It took all my concentration to sit up and eat. It’s a horrible feeling being so exhausted.
