Antofagasta is the second biggest city in Chile and we spend some time lost in the one-way-streets, trying to buy some things for our travels to the remote altiplano - like antifreeze for diesel in order not to get stuck after a cold night on 5000m height.
On our way to Antofagasta we visit the observatory Paranal, where an array of four telescopes with a primary mirror of 8,20m diameter each are used to watch the southern skies. Impressive! There is even more to come: In addition to the Very Large Telescope (VLT), the E-ELT which is about to be built in the same place will have an amazing mirror of 42m diameter!
German version will follow.
Deutsche Version folgt bei Gelegenheit.
